Catamount Hardware

In my introductory post I highlighted some useful features of the new atlas. Here are a few more:

Maps: Geolocation + full-screen

All the maps have a “you are here” button in the controls on the right-hand side. Click it and you’ll get the usual blue dot showing where you are.

Right below the geolocation control is a full-screen button . Click that the map will open up in a full-screen view, allowing you to see much more. Press the shrink button or the escape key on your keyboard to return to the normal view.

As always, a video is worth a million words.

Conditions reports

Every entry in the atlas has a link to search for conditions reports. Take, for example, Green River Reservoir. In the information box on the right-hand side of the screen (or the top of the page, if you’re on a phone or other small screen), you’ll see a link labelled Conditions that takes you to the VTNordicskating group archive, with a search pre-entered for “Green River Reservoir”. Of course, at this point in the season no one has actually skated the reservoir, but Evan mentioned it in a scouting post yesterday, so you’ll see that at the top of the search results.

If you’re looking at ice in New Hampshire, you’ll see a similar link to the NHNordicSkating group archive. But that group is searchable only by logged-in members of the group. (Of course, you should join! See the groups page for more info.) The VTNordicskating group archive is searchable by anyone.

That’s it for today. Feel free to send me any feedback or suggestions. Fingers crossed for good ice soon!
