Schofield Pond is a small remote pond contained within Green River Reservoir State Park, but not easily accessible from anywhere. There is one cabin on the pond, which is closed up in the winter. It is a peaceful and pristine destination.
So pristine, in face, that it’s one of Vermont’s Sentinal Lakes, meaning that the state monitors its health and water quality. Any small change in Schofield Pond’s ecosystem health indicates a larger change in the surrounding area. You can read latest sentinal lakes report for more information.
Launches + Parking
When I skated Schofield in early January 2024, I bushwhacked in from campsite 15 on the Green River Reservoir. I wound up making the walk four times (two back and forth trips total), and I found that going along the east edge of the brook was the easiest.
There must be a way in by trail, to access and service the cabin, though I found no trail from the reservoir. The only obvious possibility I see is from the gate on Diggins Road. I don't know if that's truly feasible, if there's any parking, or if it's better than going via the reservoir.
