Skating on Mascoma Lake
The Mascoma Lake Skating Association maintains a skating trail around the lake, when conditions permit. Most often the trail is located south of the Shaker Bridge, sometimes north, and sometimes both areas are skateable.
At times the whole lake is clear and thick enough for skating, but typically most of the lake is snow covered and the trail is maintained by machine.
In 2023 there were plans to have rentals and sharpening available at a pop-up branch of the Nordic Skater
, located at the Baited Hook.
Food and drink is available from the Baited Hook.
Ice fishing is also popular on Mascoma Lake.
Launches + Parking
Mascoma Boat Launch
The main launch for the skating trail is at the Mascoma Boat Launch.
This provides access to the southern portion (below the bridge) of the trail, which is usually the first and most reliable section to be cleared.
Ample parking is available in the Shakoma Beach parking lot,
directly across Route 4a.
Shakoma Beach
The launch for northern portion (above the bridge) of the skating trail is at Shakoma Beach,
which is directly across Main Street from the Mascoma Boat Launch.
Ample parking is available in the Shakoma Beach parking lot,
directly across Route 4a.
Lakeside Park
When Mascoma is in condition for wild ice skating, Lakeside Park
(on the eastern shore of the bridge) can be an option. Limited parking is available.
Baited Hook
When the northern section of the skating trail is plowed, or when Mascoma is in condition for wild ice skating, the Baited Hook
can be an option. Sometimes a pond hockey rink is cleared as well. Limited parking is available. Also tasty milkshakes.
